Sonar
SOund
Navigation And Ranging This is what the original acronym of the word sonar was. Sonar uses sound waves to navigate and essentially "see" in the place of actual vision. Sonar can detect objects by emitting sound waves that bounce off objects and come back to the reciever, giving away it's position. In World War I, submarines first began to use sonar to detect other ships. Many types of mammals also use sonar to detect their prey or just to see such as bats and dolphins. This is called echolocation. |
